Some of my best childhood memories are of my family’s road trips across the U.S. in the late 90’s. I distinctly remember staring out the window and listening to Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle” as the scenery passed by. Being the youngest, I was at the mercy of my parents’ and older siblings’ music tastes. To be fair to them, if I had it my way, Barney – the beloved purple dinosaur from PBS – would have serenaded us throughout our journeys instead. Now that my music tastes have matured, here are some of my favorite song suggestions for folks exploring the country and the wider world! 1. “America” by Simon and Garfunkel When traveling from London to Paris and back again, I listened to this ‘60s tune on loop. Now, I strongly associate “America” with France. Weird, I know. Do I regret it? Not in the slightest. However, this song might be best suited to those of us who are trekking within the United States. 2. “Life Is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts Maybe you prefer the original version by Tom Cochrane – it doesn’t matter! Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking: Of course! This song is amazing! This is my go-to song in karaoke! Why didn’t I think of that? I don’t know why you didn’t think of that, but I’m happy to help. 3. “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash If you’re traveling alone, there’s no travel partner like the Man in Black. Even you have a co-pilot, tell them to move over for Mr. Cash, they’ll understand. After all, he’s been everywhere, and he’s helping you and everybody else get there too! 4. “Promised Land” by Chuck Berry Listen to this rock ‘n’ roll tune about a young man trying to make his way from Norfolk, Virginia, to Los Angeles, California. No matter where you’re headed, the momentum of this classic song can get you there. 5. “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong For a mellower mood, throw on this old tune. Its message is exactly as its title suggests – that our world is wonderful. It’s a reality that’s easy to forget and on some occasions may seem impossible. In moments like that, this famous trumpeter can remind you of all that is wonderful around you – that is, if your travels haven’t reminded you already.
