Music Teachers – What are Your August Plans?

As we quickly turn the corner into the month of August (July, where have you gone?!), I was thinking of what you music teachers might be going through while you prepare for the new school year. Perhaps you are putting away your summer yoga pants and buying a brand new pant suit, with the full intention of actually dressing up at 4am for your zero hour class. Maybe you have made a resolution, or two, for this year’s freshman class – “I will be patient. I WILL be patient.” Or perhaps you are already starting to plan your first week of lessons, itching to go back to school. As you slowly tick off the days on your summer calendar, you are somewhat excited to get back in the classroom but you know in the back of your mind that the hectic days will come much too soon… and they will!

If you’re planning to tour overseas with your ensemble, my advice to you is start early! Whether you are thinking about 2015, 2016 or even 2017 travel, it’s never too early to at least get the ball rolling, especially if you have some free time on your hands now. The last thing you want to do is wait until you are bogged down in your student’s lives – between parent-teacher meetings, grading homework, writing lesson plans and dealing with the administration, the school year will fly by and you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to give your students (and yourself!) a new and exciting cultural experience.

So in August, make it a goal to at least start the conversation. Talk to some parents, students, and staff to see if traveling is on the radar for this year, or in the future. Decide what your students can afford, what destinations in particular peak their interest and the best time to travel during the year. Then, when September hits, you can have a running start with your recruitment efforts.

Good luck and we hope to hear from you!
